Professor Wolf-Dieter Prieur died on February 13, 2019 at the age of 92. With his passing his colleagues have lost an outstanding figure in veterinary medicine, the AO has lost an individual who was central to the development and the success of AOVET, and his family and friends have lost a man whose humanity and generosity of spirit shone through at even the darkest moments. Prieur was born on January 16, 1927 in Breslau (now Wrocław) Poland.

One of the BIG originals of veterinary orthopedics was Saki Paatsama. Born in an engineering family in Tampere, just 2 hours north of Helsinki in Finland, and with carpenters and boat builders in the family, Saki was preprogrammed to take a leading role in the carpentry of veterinary surgery.

Dr. Richard L. Rudy graduated from the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine in 1943, after which he accepted the position of instructor of large animal surgery at the College, followed by small animal surgery in 1947.  Due to the small number of veterinary faculty in the 1940s, Dr. Rudy taught many courses in his early career, and developed the first course in radiology at the College in 1945.

Dr. R. Bruce Hohn died May 8, 1986, at the age of 60 years. A Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons since 1968, Dr. Hohn was Professor of Veterinary Orthopedic Surgery at The Ohio State University for the past 17 years. He received his DVM degree from the University of Minnesota in 1951 and was in general practice in Rochester, Minnesota, until 1964, when he entered graduate school at the Mayo Clinic in conjunction with the University of Minnesota. He was the first veterinarian to be a Fellow in Orthopedic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic.

Barclay Slocum was a very special person… a gentle, quiet, very private person who played it fairly ‘close to the vest’. He functioned on a different plateau and listened to a different drummer than most. When corporations are making one, five and ten year plans they encourage their ‘think tank’ personnel to try to think ‘outside of the box’. Barclay seemed to think outside of the box as a matter of routine. This was one of the traits that seemed to distinguish him from some of the previous greats of veterinary orthopedics. He was always pushing the edge of the envelope….
