Fracture Fixation and Implants

OBJECTIVE: To compare the bending properties of String-of-Pearls® (SOP) and Limited Contact Dynamic Compression Plate® (LC-DCP) constructs in orthogonal bending directions.

METHODS: 3.5 mm SOP and LC-DCP plates were fixed to a bone model simulating a comminuted tibial fracture. Specimens were non-destructively tested in both mediolateral and craniocaudal bending for 10 cycles. Bending stiffness and total angular deformation were compared using parametric analyses (p <0.05).

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the influence of titanium mesh on guided bone regeneration when used, either alone or in combination with autogenous bone block graft, in a canine ulnar model.

OBJECTIVE: To compare a locking plate (LP) with pin and tension-band wire (pin/TBW) for fixation of mid-patellar transverse fractures.

OBJECTIVE:  To evaluate retrospectively the effectiveness of the Locking Compression Plate® (LCP), in the form of either a straight or notched head T-plate, for the treatment of fractures of the distal radius and ulna in a series of 20 toy and miniature breed dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize clinical and pathological features of implant-associated neoplasms in dogs.

DESIGN: Retrospective case-control study.

ANIMALS: 16 dogs with implant-associated neoplasia and 32 control dogs with osteosarcoma without implants.

PROCEDURES: Medical records of dogs with tumors associated with metallic implants (cases) treated between 1983 and 2013 were reviewed. Two dogs with naturally occurring osteosarcoma (controls) were matched to each case on the basis of tumor location, age, and sex.

OBJECTIVE: To document cumulative initial experience and long-term follow-up of the use of rhBMP-2/CRM for reconstruction of large mandibular defects (≥5 cm) in dogs.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series.

ANIMALS: Dogs (n = 5).

OBJECTIVE:  To report clinical experiences with the tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) procedure in small breed dogs with cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease using specific, conically coupled, 1.9/2.5 mm locking plates and evaluating short-term complications and outcome.

A nine-year-old English bulldog presented with an acute history of dyspnoea, tachycardia and discomfort localising to the ventral thorax following a fall down the stairs that morning. After the dog was stabilised, thoracic radiographs revealed a luxation of the third and fourth sternebrae with dorsal displacement of the caudal segment.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the in vitro biomechanical properties of four different configurations of acrylic external skeletal fixator constructs.

CASE REPORTS: Sacral fracture repair was accomplished in a cat and five dogs using a composite technique consisting of pins and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA).

In three of the cases, planned traditional iliosacral lag screw fixation was either abandoned or considered inadequate and in the other three, fracture configuration demanded an alternate repair method. All six cases healed uneventfully with no surgery-associated complications.
