Hip dysplasia is one of the most common orthopedic conditions affecting dogs.
Initially, laxity of the femur leads to subluxation, and subluxation can lead to an abnormal development or to progressive degeneration of the femoral head and dorsal acetabular rim.
Osteoarthritis and its clinical impact progress over time. Changes to the femoral head and neck and the acetabulum and the impact on joint motion and pain vary widely among dogs.
The concept of a novel patient-specific 3D-printed shelf implant should be evaluated in a relevant large animal model with hip dysplasia. Therefore, three dogs with radiographic bilateral hip dysplasia and a positive subluxation test underwent unilateral acetabular augmentation with a 3D-printed dog-specific titanium implant. The contralateral side served as control.
Case history: Medical records of a single private practice (Illinois, USA) were retrospectively reviewed to identify dogs (n = 24) that had an open hip reduction with a transarticular suture stabilisation technique after presenting with a traumatic coxofemoral luxation between April 2003 and December 2018.
Objective: To describe the surgical technique and report the long-term outcome of greater trochanteric osteotomy (GTO) as a component of cementless total hip replacement (THR) in dogs with severe medialization of the greater trochanter or chronic craniodorsal hip luxation.
Study design: Short case series.
Animals: Four dogs treated with five THRs.
