January 2009, Small Animal Case 1

Clinical history A 7 months old mixed breed dog presented with a history of a recent femoral fracture. Further examination of the patient indicated pain on flexion of the elbow joint. Radiographs were made of the affected elbow.Affected limb Radiographic report No definite evidence of injury to the elbow was noted on the radiographs. The appearance of the growth plate of the olecranon process was thought to be within normal limits for this age patient. Because of persistent pain on motion of the joint and the skeletal immaturity of the patient, comparison radiographs were made of the normal elbow. Clinically normal limb   Comparison studies Final radiographic report Comparison of the studies clearly shows the partial avulsion of the olecranon process. The limb was placed in a splint to reduce the tension on the apophyseal center. A radiographic study was made 11 days later that showed further minimal displacement of the apophyseal center with early callus that was bridging the fracture site. Follow-up study
